SNAPSHOT ON LEARNING TERM 3!

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome back, everyone! I hope that all families had an enjoyable break and are ready for what is shaping up to be a very exciting term at Exeter High School.
I am consistently amazed at the conscious effort, commitment, and persistence to learning that is demonstrated every day by our staff and students. I can walk into any classroom at any time of the day and ask students what they are learning about, and they can always articulate what they are learning and the purpose for learning it. I always see students asking questions about what they must do to improve, which is proof that we have a very strong culture of learning here at Exeter.
This week, our school vision will be released to the community. This vision statement clearly articulates what we are and stand for as a learning institution. The vision statement has been produced in consultation with staff, students and the community so we can all take ownership of it.
In the next month, all students will be asked to complete a wellbeing survey. We really care about the wellbeing of our students, so in the next three weeks we will be conducting lesson so that students understand the importance of the information we get from the survey and how we can use this to improve to make sure we are catering for all of our learners.
The survey focusses on the following domains:
- feeling loved, safe, and valued
- having access to material basics
- having their physical, mental, and emotional needs met
- learning and participating
- having positive sense of culture and identity
Wellbeing for learning recognises the importance of supporting the wellbeing of children and young people in their learning environments.
This includes creating culturally responsive and inclusive learning settings and supporting improved educational outcomes for learners with diverse needs.
A strong sense of wellbeing allows children and young people to have the confidence and resilience to be in the best position to learn.
At Exeter High School, we want all our young people to feel safe, connected, and secure as they are more likely to engage in their learning. A strong sense of wellbeing enables learners to confidently explore, experiment and engage actively in their learning environment and take advantage of new opportunities.
Wellbeing means that children and young people feel loved, safe, and valued; have access to material basics; have their physical, mental, and emotional needs met; are learning and participating; and have a positive sense of culture and identity. This holistic approach acknowledges the many factors that contribute to the wellbeing of our children and young people. If you have any questions about this survey, please contact the school.
I am pleased to announce that the redevelopment is coming to an end, and in around seven weeks' time, we will take occupancy of Block 5, which is great news for our Year 9 and 10 students.

YEAR 7 ENGLISH BUILDING THE WIZARD WORLD
As part of their study of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, our Year 7 students have had the magical opportunity to build Harry Potter LEGO sets in class. While building, they were inspired by watching a Harry Potter-themed episode of LEGO Masters, sparking creativity and collaboration as they brought the wizarding world to life. The completed sets will be displayed in the Grade 7 area, and we’ll keep our community posted on the progress of this enchanting project.

YEAR 8 POETRY

Our Year 8 students - along with some of our Year 7 students were taken on The Poet’s Quest on Monday morning, thanks to the talented team from Poetry in Action. It was a fun and inspiring performance that brought poetry to life and made a great connection to the creative writing units students are exploring this term.
1000 HEARTS

This week, a small group of students participated in the first planning session of a Heartfelt Leadership Project with Sarah De Jonge of 1000 Hearts. Students began mapping out their 1000 Hearts kindness project for our school and community, considering who might make and receive hearts and what they want the project to achieve.

The school is very grateful for the generosity of Sarah and our wonderful students, using their time and efforts to create positive change. There will be more information to come about ways to be involved with this special project.
