PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome back to Term 3. We have started in a very calm and settled manner, which ensures that students once again have the best opportunity possible to learn. As a staff, we spent part of the student free day last week developing a school vision to take Exeter High School forward over the coming five years. This involved staff brainstorming what they want our school, as a learning environment, to look like in the future. This was very exciting work and I look forward to sharing it with the community as it evolves over the remainder of this year.
I have mentioned that we now have a school pantry in the administration foyer area where parents are welcome to help themselves to food and other household items to support families within our community. Our Business Manager, Mandy Doyle, is also happy to take phone orders from families and box up some items to be sent home if this is easier to organise. We have sent many parcels home and are more than happy to continue to facilitate this as needed.
We have around 190 of our students attending a science workshop with renowned scientist, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki next Friday at the Inveresk Tram Sheds. This is another example of ensuring our students are exposed to as many valuable learning opportunities as possible. I’m sure they will have a great time and have their eyes opened to many exciting and interesting scientific facts that Dr Karl is famous for introducing to student and adults.

ARE YOU MAKING EVERY SCHOOL DAY COUNT?

It’s Term 3 already – welcome back for another term!
As we move through the school year, sometimes regular school attendance can be challenging.
It’s important your child keeps up good attendance habits though.
Going to school every day means your child has every chance to learn and be around their friends and teachers. Every day adds up, to benefit your child now and in the future.
If you’re having trouble getting your child to school, please talk to us. We’ll listen to your situation and help in any way we can.
If you’re looking for tips on how to create better attendance habits, visit the Anything can happen website.

SAM’S UNITED NATIONS YOUTH CONFERENCE EXPERIENCE

I was lucky enough to be selected as one of nine Tasmanian delegates to the United Nations Youth Australia National Conference for 2023, which was held from the 6th to 12th of July in Perth, Western Australia. This conference entailed attending multiple workshops on the topics of globalisation, migration, decolonisation, and other interesting topics which concern our world today. We participated in a simulated political crisis (Interactive Problem Solving) and tried to end the conflict peacefully (which did not work). I attended multiple Model UN debates as the delegate for the United Arab Emirates, and even got to make a speech in the Parliament of Western Australia! We were addressed (in person and virtually) by many successful figures of Australian politics and diplomacy, including Anne Aly, Minister for Youth, and Penny Wong, Minister for Foreign Affairs. I got the chance to meet some incredible fellow Year 9-12 students from around the country, network with people to open up further opportunities, and of course have a great deal of fun! I would like to thank UN Youth Australia and the West Tamar Council for their gracious sponsorship which allowed me to attend.

YEAR 8 DRAMA

The Year 8 Drama class performed two Children's Theatre performances on Friday 30th June to the Grade 1 and 2 classes from EPS - Little Hood Riding Brat and The Princess Who Couldn't Laugh.
Little Hood Riding Brat is a twisted fairytale that pokes fun at the original tale, Little Red Riding Hood. In this version, Little Red has some issues concerning her name, her mother’s baking, granny’s neighbourhood, and the list goes on! Will the narrator ever be able to tell this story without her constant nagging? Will the wolf really eat granny? Will any of them live ‘happily ever after?’
The Princess Who Couldn’t Laugh finds a king searching for someone, anyone, who can make his daughter Princess Sombina laugh for she is under a spell and sadness is slowly killing her. Many people in the kingdom have tried, but only one poor farmer will find a way to the princess’ funny bone.
Students were incredibly nervous for their first performance but passed with flying colours. Year 8 students are eagerly looking forward to their next performance – Friday 7th July to Grade 3 and 4 EPS students.
A massive thank you needs to be mentioned to Riley and Charlotte who frantically learnt lines to fill in for people away, and Olivia for helping out with the lighting. It was absolutely fantastic work by the Grade 8 Drama students.

YEAR 10 MOCK INTERVIEWS

On the 27th and 28th of June, Year 10 students participated in the mock interviews. The mock interviews take place to prepare students for job interviews in the future. There were four interview panels, each consisting of two local business owners. The interviews went for twenty minutes each, with students required to bring a resume, along with a folder of certificates and likewise achievements. The interviewers asked a series of questions about what students plan to do for work post-college and about qualities future employers will look for. Many Year 10 students found the interviews to be extremely helpful and a good preparation for the future.
